Muscles that are exercised to the extreme may lose their ability to relax, causing hypertonic muscles (tight) muscles, and the loss of flexibility. Muscle soreness may come from the lack of flexibility and opens the muscle up to injuries like muscle pulls and tears. Ischemia, poor blood flow through tight muscles also causes pain. Muscle groups are used differently, depending on what sport or athletic event in which you engage. Sports massage therapists are familiar with each muscle, their muscle groups and the way they are affected by the movements and stresses of each sport.
